shiro studio: marble lunar crater trays
'mare tranquillitatis' by shiro studio
lunar craters are almost two billion years old, and today, we can observe them unchanged since their formation.
these craters show the physical impact over an undisturbed terrain by revealing the presence of concave depressions,
left by the collision of an object against the silent lunar surface. london-based shiro studio has developed a series of marble trays,
'mare tranquilitatis', conceived by applying the lunar craters analogy, where every intersecting concavity is metaphorically carved
by the mass and weight of the resting objects. the diversity of depths for each concavity generates different diameters,
allowing a variety of different objects to comfortably rest on the tray. the fine ribbed texture reveals the industrial milling process
and it has been deliberately left visible to declare its contemporary machined genesis. each individual tray measures 350 x 350 x 55 mm
and is made of white carrara c marble, manufactured in italy.

with the extendable bar and custom cargo box, 40 kg (88 lbs) of goods can be carried thanks to
the load being distributed on the two back wheels. given the fact that the wheels
are only 35 cm (14 inches) apart, it can be parked in the same locations as any bicycle.
as it folds into a compact form, the bike itself is easily transportable.

inesa malafej: my writing desk
'my writing desk' by inesa malafej
lithuanian-born inesa malafej of etc.etc. has sent us images of her 'my writing desk' a workspace which has been designed
to reduce difficulties of working in a mess.
a storage trough is organized around three sides of the table top, where things may be placed off the main writing surface,
but still in sight and easily accessible. the desktop can be utilized right up to its edges without worrying that things may fall down,
and unnecessary objects can simply be pushed to the storage sides. the high edges of the desk isolates within the room in which it stands.
the wings are divided for simple construction, leaving a path for the wires. there are two drawers for a laptop and writing equipment.
the legs of the table can be twisted off for easier transportation.
